They are a cool climate plant and will tolorate mild frosts, the first crop for the season should be sown about a month before the last frost then every three months after that, unless you have particually hot summers (+28 Degs), if it does get hot during summer then don't sow any after late spring, wait instead until the Autumn.
I like the late maturing tall varieties, they take a bit longer to produce but they then will fruit over a long period of time.
Grow them up a trellis, the late varieties can get to 1.5 m tall.
Peas love Cow Manure if you can get it, otherwise any Animal Manure you can lay your hands on will be fine. Bury the Manure in the ground under where the seed will be sown, this has always given me the best results.
Presoak the seed in a seaweed solution prior to sowing (about an hour) and always let a few pods mature and dry on the vine for next seasons seed.
