Lime versus Dolomite, so what is the difference?
Lime is Calcium Carbonate and is a tried and tested material for improving heavy soils texture and increasing the PH of soils as well.
Its raising of the PH can be a little slow as it is quite course and slow to break down, so larger quantities are sometimes applied in the initial years of treatment.
Up to 5 kilos per m3 (1 kilo m3 is considered a maintenance dressing).
If Lime is dug into the soil its effects can be dramatically faster, worms love Lime (and Dolomite) as they like a sweet soil that goes hand in hand with a better PH.
Dolomite on the other hand is Calcium and Magnesium Carbonate which has a slightly lesser effect on the PH but is generally ground finer so breaks down quicker, the Magnesium content helps to green the leaves of plants.
Magnesium increases the Chloroform in the leaf which in turn increases the Photosynthetic rate of the plant..
Citrus have a great love of Magnesium, yellowing of the leaves is quite common, this is a simple Magnesium Deficiency which can be remedied immediately with Epsom Salts intially but annual applications of Dolomite will fix the problem long term.
Dolomite is more expensive than Lime but in my opinion worth it to see a nice rich green crop.
