Compost is the corner stone of Organic Gardening, you can start with gravel and still end up with a good soil by adding copious amounts of Compost.
You can make your own Compost if you have a backyard and a lawn mower, recipe as follows:
1. One lawn mower with catcher (some petrol to make it go helps too!)

2. Mow your lawn, something you have to do anyway!
3. Add some tree-shrub prunings, I normally trim any shrubs and plants before I mow, just run over them with the lawn mower a few times to pick it all up, go slowly to allow the mower to break up the vegetation, the prunings give the Compost substance rather than just mushy old grass clippings. For a few days before a mowing I will collect food scraps etc inside and then place them on the lawn to be picked up by the mower as well, this way you get a good distribution of different material in the Compost heap.

4. It takes me about six mowing's to gather enough material to make a good pile, I lay each lot one on top of the other but giving it a good turning over each week to make sure that the bottom of the heap doesn't start to rot before there is enough to add the final touches
.
Now you add shredded newspaper, Animal Manure (preferably Chicken it has a better Nitrogen content for Composting) a little Lime if you want and mix thoroughly. You will need between five and ten percent by volume of Animal Manure, the more you use the quicker the Composting process, water well, turn every week and add more water if the pile is drying out.
5. In two to three months you will have beautiful black Compost to bless your gardens with, don't forget to top dress your pot plants with this magic brew, the results never fail to amaze.
Be Happy,
Barry.
