So you have some weeds you need to get rid of, how can we banish them without reaching for the Roundup?
1, Pull them out, water the soil the day before it will makes them easier to pull out, if they are in flower or have seed heads throw them away otherwise just leave them where you pull them out, they will decompose into the soil helping to raise the Organic content of your soil.
2, Cultivation, Push Hoe or a Shovel, just cut the weed below the soil line and most weeds won't recover, the more persistent types will need to be dug up, like hand pulling the weeds die where they land and are cheap compost.
3, Vinegar with salt added at the rate of 100 grms per 1L of Vinegar is quite good at knocking down softer weeds, just use Vinegar from your local Grocery Store. Keep as much off the soil as you can as the mixture has a very low PH and can have a detrimental impact on the soil if over applied.
4, Heat be it boiling water or a flame is very effective at destroying weeds, a portable gas blow torch is great, you just need to burn the centre of the weed and the next day it will perish before your very eyes. Another method is to lay a sheet of clear plastic on top of the weeds,(trample them first) and the seal it around the edges, bricks or the likes are good, the heat from the sun cooks them and they just die from the heat generated under the plastic.
5, The best result is to use plenty of Compost-Mulch on top of the soil at planting time and maintain a healthy layer during the growing season this doesn't gives any weeds a chance to get a hold.
