Potash is the health nutrient for plants, it is their vitamin B, the nutrient that helps during times of climatic or physiological stress.
At key times in a plants development Potash is essential, flowering and fruit growth are two, the good thing about this nutrient is that a deficiency can be remedied quickly as it is quite mobile in the plant and plant available in the ground soon after extra is applied.
However it is always better to get the soil levels up and rely on the natural soil processes to supply the plant.
Wood Ash is the only real Organic Potash fertiliser, usually containing about 6% Potash, other than this you have to rely on general NPK fertilisers, which can be expensive as you are paying for other nutrients that you don't really need.
In commercial organic circles Sulphate of Potash is permitted in cases of deficiency, it is a soft chemical fertiliser which can be applied without to much harm to the soil environment, as with some Phoshorus fertilisers mix it with compost and let it sit for a while slightly wet and then apply.
Hope this helps,
