Two things, one always mulch the soil around your plants if not the whole garden, Mulch stops moisture from evaporating into the atmosphere and also helps the soil structure as it breaks down. I always use newspaper or cardboard on top of the ground then the mulch on that, water well first but this stops weeds and the cardboard-paper is very cheap mulch.
Second always water deep, don't put a little on every day, water a lot once or twice a week, this encourages the roots deep into the soil and gives the plant more nutrient from deeper roots.
