Organic Liquid fertiliser is a great way to feed plants, the nutrient in the liquid is instantly available to the plants through their leaves and roots depending on which way you use it..
As a foliar feed the Liquid Fertiliser is absorbed by the leaves, the nutrients go to where the greatest need is in the plant.
Nutrient deficiencies show up in different parts of the plant, some nutrients are very mobile and move around the plant easily, where some are quite stubborn and concentrate in a particular age of leaf .
Iron and Manganese deficiencies tend to show up in the younger leaves, these two shortages are quite common in Peat soils where the PH is very low and these nutrients are locked up in the soil rendering them unavailable to the plant, this is an instance when foliar feeding is very beneficial because the lacking nutrients are applied directly to the leaves so the plant can use them.
All the solid fertiliser in the world applied to this type of soil would never see the nutrient get to the plant.
During cold snaps when the soil temperature drops and again Nutrients become unavailable to the plant via their roots, foliar feeding keeps them growing, it keeps them in good condition so when the weather picks up again they are on the front foot and recover quickly.
Not the cheapest form of Fertiliser however Liquid Fertiliser is very efficient as most of the nutrients in the brew are instantly plant available where as solid ground applied fertiliser takes time to break down and become plant available and a percentage is leached or locked up etc before the roots have a chance to make use of it.
I regularly use Organic Liquid Fertiliser such as Fish and Seaweed for both Leaf and Soil application and feel it is an essential part of successful gardening.
