Broccoli-Great Winter Vegetable

Broccoli is a great winter vegetable, it will take a series of light frosts and the chill actually helps the flavour of the heads.

When planting for a winter crop be careful with Fertilisers high in Nitrogen as this can soften the plant making it a little prone to frost damage. If the frosts do become severe and you start to see some damage, cover the plants at night with sheets of newspaper, this will stop the burning.

Cut the primary head as soon as it is big enough to harvest this will encourage smaller but various secondary heads from below that point.

This keeps plump sweet Broccoli coming for two to three months. Broccoli is great steamed with a dab of butter and garlic! how could you go wrong.

Be Happy,

Barry.
